Warm enough for locally grown tropical fruit: A plus or minus?
Over the last couple of years we have been harvesting and eating our own home grown bananas here in Kerikeri. On our daily wanders we see pineapple plants with ripe fruit and we are aware of coffee also being grown here in the far north. Should we be excited or concerned? This an article on The Spinoff delves into how the changing climate is, and will, impact on our food - both what we grow and what is available from usual sources. In short, if it is getting warm enough to grow tropical fruit in the Far North it is probably starting to get too warm to grow some other crops and, even, worse, it is could become too hot to grow them in tropical countries that are the Worlds major suppliers now.
